Thermally Modified Wood
Thermal modification is a chemical-free treatment that alters wood to the core. High-heat and steam cycles pull the moisture and natural sugars from the wood create a long-lasting ultra-durable choice for siding, cladding, and decking.
We’re proud to offer thermally modified wood in the following selections

Benefits of thermally modified wood
-
The thermal modification process reduces the moisture content of the wood to nearly 0% as the water is drawn from the wood so are the natural sugars. This removes all nutrient sources for pests and microorganisms (mould and other forms of rot) since they cannot sustain themselves living in or on the wood there is less chance of them damaging the wood.
-
Due to the extremely low moisture content, thermally modified wood is more durable than standard woods. Boards are less suspectable to warping, cupping, twisting, expanding, and contracting. This makes the wood a great choice for exterior applications, especially in areas with more extreme weather variance.
-
Thermal modification deepens the colour of the wood, creating beautifully luxurious warm, brown, earthy tones consistently throughout each board.
The wood can be installed as is, without the use of protective coatings and allowed to age, transforming itself into a beautiful silver-grey appearance.
The silvering process can be deferred with UV blocking stains and oils if desired. We offer several collections of pigmented stain and oil treatments, view our thermal wood product pages to see the available options.
-
Due to its strength and durability, thermally modified woods don't depend on protective coatings like other wood products do.
Because of this, thermally modified woods don't require the regular maintenance demanded by other wood products.
Reapplication of any stains or oils is not necessary and can be done at the discretion of the home or property owner and their preferences.

Thermally modified decking disperses heat more evenly than standard wood decking so your deck never feels too hot to stand on.
-
Thermal modification doesn't depend on chemicals. Instead, the wood undergoes a two-week series of high-heat and steam cycles that alter the wood to the core.
